A few words, ready when they want them.
Open-when letters are small messages for different moments: missing you, finishing a difficult day, or needing a smile. They work best when each one offers something specific, rather than repeating the same reassurance under a different heading.
How it works
- 01
Choose a few situations you recognise
Begin with three prompts that fit the person: “you miss our Sundays,” “your presentation is over,” or “you want a small laugh.” Avoid guessing at private problems they have not shared with you.
- 02
Give each note a different job
One can hold a memory, another a practical offer of company, and another a familiar joke. A message for a difficult day does not need to fix it. “I can listen if you want” leaves more room than “You have nothing to worry about.”
- 03
Write directly to them
Use the name of the place, meal or habit you both know. Keep the note short enough to read in one sitting. Avoid making demands such as “Call me as soon as you open this” or asking them to prove how often they use the gift.
- 04
Make and test the collection
Choose the Open When jar below and write your prompts and notes. In Preview, open each note to check it has the right message. Save and create a private link when ready. The headings are invitations; the recipient decides which note to open and when.
What “open when” means in this app
The jar does not detect somebody’s mood, location or circumstances. Notes are not automatically locked until their prompt becomes true. The person holding the link chooses a heading and opens it themselves.
For one longer message, use a letter instead. For a spoken note, a voice keepsake can be a separate gift. Keep your original words or audio somewhere you control; a sharing link is not a backup guarantee.
Three ways to begin
These are fictional examples. Keep the shape, then replace every detail with your own.
“Imagine the little table by the window: your tea, my coffee, and the crossword we never finish. I miss it too. If you feel like a call later, I would like that.”
“You do not have to turn today into a lesson tonight. Eat something, put your bag down, and let the day be over. I can listen or keep you company while we talk about something else.”
“I hope you are letting yourself enjoy it before moving to the next task. Tell me the whole story if you want. I am ready for the long version.”
Keep this in mind
A collection is an offer of company, not a schedule or a relationship test. They can open every note at once, come back to one, or save it for later. The gift should feel just as generous whichever they choose.

Questions and answers
- How many open-when letters should I start with?
- Three distinct notes are a useful starting point. Add more only when you have something different to say. A small personal collection is more useful than many nearly identical messages.
- Can they open a note before the situation happens?
- Yes. The prompts are labels, not restrictions. The app does not verify moods or prevent the recipient from exploring the collection.
- Can I put a separate recording inside each jar note?
- The notes jar holds written messages. A voice keepsake is a separate template you can preview and personalise; do not expect a recording field inside each jar note.
- Can they keep using the same link?
- While the link is active, they can return to it. Its expiry, view limit and any password still apply. Revoke or delete the gift when you no longer want it available; no-expiry is not a promise of lifetime hosting.
